IOE Entrance Syllabus 2083: Full Breakdown by Subject
100 questions, 140 marks, four subjects, negative marking. Here's exactly how the IOE entrance syllabus breaks down and what to study first.
If you're preparing for the IOE B.E./B.Arch entrance, the first thing to get right isn't a study technique — it's knowing exactly how the 140 marks are distributed, so you don't spend a month on a subject that's worth 20 marks while ignoring one worth 50.
The IOE B.E./B.Arch pattern (2083)
- Mathematics — 50 marks. The single highest-weighted subject. Algebra, Calculus, Trigonometry, Vectors, Coordinate Geometry, and Statistics.
- Physics — 40 marks. Mechanics, Electromagnetism, Modern Physics, Optics, Heat, and Waves.
- Chemistry — 30 marks. Physical, Organic, and Inorganic chemistry at IOE depth, with heavy emphasis on reaction mechanisms.
- English — 20 marks. Grammar, comprehension, and vocabulary — the section most students under-prepare for despite it being the easiest to score close to full marks in.
That's 100 questions for 140 marks total, in a 2-hour computer-based test, with negative marking for wrong answers. The exam is conducted by the Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University.
If you're aiming at BSc CSIT instead
The CSIT entrance (conducted by TU's Institute of Science and Technology, IoST) is a different pattern: 100 questions for 100 marks — Mathematics 25, Physics 25, Chemistry 25, English 15, and Computer Aptitude 10. If you're unsure which exam you're actually preparing for, check the full syllabus page for the topic-by-topic split of both patterns before you buy any preparation material.
What this distribution means for your study order
Because Mathematics carries more marks than Chemistry and English combined, a weak Math score is the hardest thing to compensate for elsewhere. The usual order that works: build Math and Physics concepts first (three months), move into Chemistry and timed problem-solving across all four subjects next (two months), then spend the final stretch on full-pattern mock tests and English — which responds fastest to focused revision precisely because it's the smallest, most learnable section.
Frequently asked
Is the IOE entrance syllabus the same every year? The core topics are stable year to year, but always confirm against the current year's official notice — Clamphook keeps the syllabus page updated for the 2083 session specifically.
Where can I see topic-wise weightage, not just subject totals? The syllabus page breaks every subject down into chapters with topic counts, so you can see exactly how many questions typically come from, say, Mechanics versus Modern Physics within the 40-mark Physics section.
Does English really matter if it's only 20 marks? Yes — because it's the section where a well-prepared student can realistically get close to full marks with the least study time, English is often the difference between two students with similar Math and Physics scores.
